Media Project with Parkinson's Disease

Image
For my media project, I was assigned with an 83 years old retired dairy farmer named Maurice who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease for a decade. Maurice lived with his wife named Dina who was 79 years olde and they both had no children. Dina was his caregiver and she broke her back helping him so she agreed to admitting Maurice to a skilled nursing facility so he can get the needed help she wasn't able to provide, like supporting him physically. Maurice has bilateral cataracts, poor vision and his speech is difficult to understand sometimes especially when he's fatigued. Maurice has problems with wheelchair positioning, transfer difficulty and unsafe to sit unsupported in a wheelchair. He also has rigidity in all limbs and little spontaneous movements, his movements are slow and awkward. From the report, he is social and loves visits from friends and neighbors. Maurice reported to have pain in hands, hips and knees bilaterally. H...

Holly's Story: My Experience with MG Treatments

Image
I watched a youtube video by Raremark Health titled  Holly's Story: My Experience with MG Treatments. I chose this video because of the title and the interest to hear more about treatments and how the clients feel.We are currently learning about Myasthenia Gravis (MG), which is known to be a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder and this video drew my attention to get to know a bit more details about it. Knowing more about treatments for various disorders are very interesting to me because it's all a process and there's a lot of learning and experiences with them. In this video, Holly spoke about the symptoms she had, which was double vision ,her journey with MG from diagnoses through the whole journey and treatments that were approved. One thing i did to help further my understanding about MG was i read the lecture notes and watched this other video on youtube just to give more insight about the disorder itself. I learned a lot from this video. One thing I...

Thriving in the Face of Adversity

Image
I watched this Ted talk video on youtube titled "Thriving in the Face of Adversity" which was by Stephanie Buxhoeveden. I chose this resource because the title caught my attention and i wanted to learn more after I read the summary about when she was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. In this TEDx Talk she spoke about her story of being 25 years and got into a nursing anesthesia school, and enjoyed working out to relax. one day while working out right foot fell asleep and never woke back up and the pain in few weeks, started to spread to the next. She swept it away and didn't pay attention. She realized she had no feelings from waist down one day as she was in the locker room getting ready. She started having problems with her arms and vision. She went through painful tests and was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis. She talked about how it all occurred in the prime of her life. Her type of MS was the Relapsing-Remitting MS and this certain attack where ...

Groom Paralyzed Playing Football Walks Down The Aisle: Ins

Image
I watched a youtube video titled "Groom Paralyzed Playing Football Walks Down The Aisle: Inside Chris Norton's Story" posted by People. It is a video about college football player who got hurt during the game and became paralyzed. He had  a fracture of the vertebras C3 and C4 which are known to be one of the most severe fractures anyone could get so he was told he only had three percent chance of moving anything below his neck again, but after 7 years, he walks his bride 7-yards down the aisle. This made me understand the impact of support system and also motivation.        To learn more, I watched his full story on Netflix which gave more details about his life story and details. The first lecture about Spinal Cord Injury really made me curious about spinal cord injuries and people who experience it. It makes me think of how fragile we can be. In relation to course content, I learnt that exercise is very imp...

NEURO ASPECTS - SIMS 1

As part of the Neuro Aspects course I'm taking in OT school, I participated in a clinical simulation encounter today during which I administered a cognitive screening to a person with a recent history of stroke. It was a very interesting experience where I got to learn a lot first hand administering an assessment and analyzing what I did well on and what I need to work on. Cognition focuses on an individual's attention and understanding. Cognition is about how the person reasons with things and how they see things. It's part of many aspects of an individual, like how they think, their memory, mobility, vision, and even every aspect of their lifestyle.         The client scored a 16 on the SLUMS test, which we didn't complete so he had more questions left. This score indicated that he had dementia. He knew what he wanted to say but he got frustrated at certain points when he had difficulties and it was a bit hard. In a hospital, home an...

CAN I HAVE YOUR BRAIN?

Image
I watched a TEDx Talk video titled Can I Have Your Brain by Chris Nowinski, who is an American neuroscientist. I chose this resource because it was about concussions and  I  wanted to know details from someone's point of view. We are currently learning about Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Non-Traumatic Brain Injuries. The topic of concussions, especially when it comes to athletes is something i usually like to search about because my brothers weren't allowed to play football because of fear of concussions and anything affecting their brain. Many athletes suffer from brain injuries due to concussions from mostly being hit in the head which causes dementia, psychosis and even death, known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.        I learned a lot from this resource. One thing Chris Nowinski talked about was the importance of studying brains. He talked about how these brain problems could be prevented if athletes or peopl...
