Media Project with Parkinson's Disease
For my media project, I was assigned with an 83 years old retired dairy farmer named Maurice who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease for a decade. Maurice lived with his wife named Dina who was 79 years olde and they both had no children. Dina was his caregiver and she broke her back helping him so she agreed to admitting Maurice to a skilled nursing facility so he can get the needed help she wasn't able to provide, like supporting him physically. Maurice has bilateral cataracts, poor vision and his speech is difficult to understand sometimes especially when he's fatigued. Maurice has problems with wheelchair positioning, transfer difficulty and unsafe to sit unsupported in a wheelchair. He also has rigidity in all limbs and little spontaneous movements, his movements are slow and awkward. From the report, he is social and loves visits from friends and neighbors. Maurice reported to have pain in hands, hips and knees bilaterally. His main concerns are that he could be bored and lonely if he doesn't return home soon.
With Maurice's main concerns being getting bored and ending up lonely, I created this project called matching cloud that the individual matches colors and numbers and grasps the colorful clouds. With this activity, I will be using an ice cube tray, different color markers and colorful cotton balls, which wont be too hard for him to hold or grasp. I chose this activity because it seemed fun and would keep the client engaged. I also chose bright colors to help with his vision to see colors well. It's very engaging and there are many ways to adapt it. Another thing we can work on is to have him say the colors and numbers out loud. This serves as a therapeutic activity that can help with hand coordination. recognition skills and reasoning skills.
This assignment supported my learning as related to this course content through helping me be client centered when it comes to clients in ways that help them and ways in being creative as a future practitioner. As a future practitioner, it's very important to adapt and find ways to motivate our clients.
