My Why: A Conversation with a Second Year Medical Student
I met a second-year medical student on campus during lunch time and she stopped and asked me what program I’m in. I told her I’m in the Occupational therapy program and she asked me what Occupational Therapy is and my motivation for becoming an OT practitioner. I began by stating to her that Occupational therapy is very client-centered and focuses on a holistic view of an individual and OTs work in many areas such as hospitals, schools, home health, skilled nursing facilities, etc. Occupational therapy focuses on daily occupations of their clients and not limited to what’s important to the client. Occupational therapy professionals evaluate, intervene and plan outcomes for their clients. I then went on to expand on a clearer explanation that as the practice of medicine adds more days to their client’s life, we focus on adding more life to the client’s days.
She asked me about my motivation for wanting to be an Occupational Therapy practitioner and it really made me think clearly. I told her broadly that I want to help people and have one on one experience with them but there’s more to my reason if she has time. Then I went ahead and explained to her. My passion for Occupational Therapy started when I first found out about the career and started to find my place with it. My motivation for Occupational Therapy now is to advocate for people who don’t have that voice and bring the importance of Occupational Therapy. I am from a place where Occupational therapy isn’t a career helped by many, and looking back at how things were and how things are now, I would like to go back to my country, and collaborate with the small Occupational therapy practitioners there and bring more knowledge about the field to more people so we can help people everywhere. Another important thing is we are always growing in the field Occupational therapy.
