Man From The South and the OT Practice article by Dr. Amini

The Man from the South is a story about a soldier betting with an older man to see if his lighter will lite the older man's cigar. The older man puts his car out for the bet and the soldier bet his little finger on his left hand if he didn't win the bet.

If the soldier had lost the bet, he would have lost his little finger which is known to help a lot with hand strength, so daily occupations like fully holding gripping stuff would be affected, for example, him opening a door or holding anything like his weapons or stuffs to workout since he's a soldier and needs to keep fit. The outcome of losing this bet is he wouldn't be able to do many hand activities that require strength like holding his door knob to open or close his door, holding weapons he uses as a soldier, brushing his hair, buttoning short, carrying bags and even brushing his teeth. One modification equipment that might help the soldier participate in these occupations would be a general purpose gripping aid. which can be used to support him to do anything during all situations. Many people use it like those who could have suffered from stroke or anything that has made hand function a difficulty.  This can help the soldier participate in many areas that he can excel from gradually. The outcome this address form the OTPF is occupational performance because with this new modification, the soldier can be independent and perform functional activities.

The man's wife with only one finger and a thumb on one hand has clearly had many effects and change in her daily routines, like not being able to produce higher force grips or just . One occupation impacted by her situation would be her carrying groceries with both hands. She would have to use one hand and it will take a lot of time for her to bring in groceries. One strategy that might help the wife participate in this faster for her would be having having one of the personal carts for home use then put most of the groceries in and pull to save time with moving in groceries. From the the OTPF, the outcome that would be addressed is quality of life. With her having found something to do to improve things that mean a lot to her to participate in.

  1. Hey Akosua!

I enjoyed reading your blog. I like how you mentioned using a door knob. That did not even come to mind when I was thinking about what all would be affected by him losing his pinkie finger. I am going to keep in mind the use of a grip aid!

  2. Hi Akosua,
I enjoyed reading your take aways from this story. I agree, I think that a universal gripping device will help the solider engage in many different occupations. I like that you chose a universal device to help the solider be more independent rather than just choose a single device. I also liked you how mentioned that a grocery cart would be a good idea for the man's wife. I think that this would also be universal and she could use it for many other things as well such as laundry. I loved your implementation of universal devices!
