A Reflection on the Eleanor lark Slagle lecture by Carolyn Manville Baum, M.A., OTR, FAOTA
I chose this speaker and topic because it stuck to me more. It caught my attention because the 1980s seem like the early time and I wanted to know what was going on and some of the beginning foundations and things going on with the Occupational therapy field during these times. I also wanted to know more from the speaker since she has played a good role in the leadership of the Occupational therapy profession and education. A phrase the speaker made that related to the OT profession more to me was “As a profession, occupational therapy harnesses will and gives the individual control through activity. That is human, that is care.” (Baum, 1980). In everyday terms, I believe this means that the OT profession really focuses on the individual and gives them control of what they want to do. The profession allows individuals to feel independent and not totally dependent on anyone.
I think the award recipient wrote about this topic because it's important to know the contributions of Occupational therapy in the health system and how it can be more expanded in different areas of health and care through services given. A good take away for me from this topic was that the profession focuses on everything of an individual and to better make it successful, we must “put our resources, intelligence, and emotional commitment together and work diligently toward the ascent of our profession.” (Baum, 1980).
